The National Broadband Plan (NBP) is the  Government pivotal initiative to deliver high speed broadband services (minimum speed of 30Mbps download and 6Mbps upload) to all businesses and households in Ireland. This is being achieved through a combination of commercial investment by the telecommunications sector and a State Intervention in those areas where commercial providers acting alone will not provide this essential service.

The Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment website provides an interactive map showing areas in the state that will receive high speed broadband through the Government intervention strategy and is available for viewing at broadband.gov.ie

 Up to the 4th April 2017 the map consisted of amber and blue areas.

•  AMBER areas - which are the target areas for the State Intervention of the National Broadband Plan.
• DARK BLUE areas - where commercial operators are delivering or have indicated plans to deliver high speed broadband services.

On 4th April 2017 the Department announced the publication of an updated High Speed Broadband Map. The new map includes over 300,000 premises nationally that will now get commercial High Speed Broadband by the end of 2018. These are LIGHT BLUE areas - new areas where commercial operators have committed to concrete plans to deliver high speed broadband in rural areas. The commercial rollout to these areas is primarily Fibre to the Home (FTTH). By 2018, all homes and businesses in these Light Blue areas can expect significant improvement to their broadband services.

The announcement means that approx. 3000 Leitrim premises are to get access to high-speed broadband within 90 weeks as part of a nationwide acceleration of broadband rollout. These premises were previously part of the 5 year State Intervention Area which will provide high speed broadband to all premises over the lifetime of the National Broadband Plan but those highlighted in light blue will now be provided by Eir in the short term. Those in the dark blue either activated or about to be activated by commercial providers. All areas on the map in either dark blue or light blue equate to over 50% of premises in Leitrim.
