The Business Case for Cybersecurity

The volume of cyberattacks on businesses in Ireland is increasing: 71% of businesses suffered at least one cyberattack in 2023 (up from 49% in 2022) and attacks on micro-businesses increased to 36% (up from 23% in 2022).

The impact of a cyberattack is costly: The immediate financial cost of an attack in Ireland in 2023 was €15,500 (average). 20% of businesses report that a cyberattack threatened the viability of their business.

There are other intangible costs to consider such as reputational damage, emotional toil, lost customers, impact on partners, and internal staff costs (e.g. notifying customers) etc.
