LEO, more than just local for ExPat Taxes

Expat Taxes is an online tax practice that works exclusively with individuals who are moving to or from Ireland. It offers expertise in expatriate tax issues and provides tax compliance (tax returns), tax advisory support and online consultations.

Founded by Stephanie and Bryan Wickham, Expat Taxes has worked with over 2,000 expat clients in its first five years. The original husband and wife team has now increased to six working for the business across three countries and the couple cannot overstate the help the Local Enterprise Office Waterford has given them since their initial meeting. “From the very first interaction the Local Enterprise Office has been 100% supportive and helpful. Our initial engagement was for a Trading Online Voucher, this really was the springboard for us to start our business. It was overwhelming initially trying to work out how and where to get funds to build a website, but the TOV really got us off on the right foot.

“We also attended digital marketing courses run by our Local Enterprise Office and this helped us form a solid understanding of how to market our business online effectively and efficiently. We were thrilled and delighted to win the 2023 Waterford Digital Marketing Award.

“The LEO was always available to help us work out what supports we qualified for. This led to us being awarded a Priming Grant in 2021 and then a Business Expansion Grant in 2023, allowing us to start to grow the team to where we are now.”

Expat Taxes has also availed of a Feasibility study grant. Many think the Local Enterprise Office solely work with local businesses working locally, but they have a growing number of clients who have ambitions to export and expand their business overseas. Expat Taxes were one of these clients and with the help of the Local Enterprise Office has succeeded in these endeavours.

Stephanie has ambitious plans, “The aim with the business is to double in head count in the next 2/3 years. Our content strategy really links with this as well as our partner network, we have worked hard to build connections with Irish Diaspora networks in the US, South East Asia and Australia. There is currently a shortage of talent in our area in Ireland, our main resource is our Human Capital so we plan to ensure we are attractive to any potential newcomers to the team. The aim is to become Ireland's leading expatriate tax advisory firm.”
