Supporting business growth with Billy Moore Metalworks

Based in his studio and workshop, near Lismore, Co. Waterford, Billy Moore creates unique functional objects of art, sculpture, furniture, and lighting.

Using traditional forging techniques while incorporating a more modern mechanised approach Billy begins each project by drawing inspiration from his surroundings on the family farm outside the quiet village of Ballysaggart. “While I mainly work in steel, my aim is to create simple, clean forms. These often take their aesthetic from old Irish farm implements, vintage machinery, and elements from Ireland’s industrial past.”

Billy attended school locally, then qualified as a sheet metal work technician, panel beater and spray painter in CIT Cork. With nearly three decades of experience in mechanical and metal engineering Billy realised he needed a more rounded business skillset, so approached the Local Enterprise Office.

“They couldn’t have been more helpful. To date I have completed two business Mentorship programmes with Waterford LEO and continue to participate in their ongoing education programmes.

“With the help of the LEO I now design and manufacture bespoke components for a wider range of businesses, including the manufacture of furniture and products for retail and commercial markets.”

Through the mentoring and grant support received by the Local Enterprise Office Billy has evolved his initial metal fabrication workshop into a thriving local business. These supports allowed for expanding the business model by upgrading equipment and training along with one-to-one mentoring in how to maximise the use of his time and skills.

It's most recent engagement with Billy Moore Metal Works was in developing an e-commerce website part funded by a trading online voucher which will not only help to increase the exposure of the business but will also allow him to sell his artwork and products direct to the customer online.

Local Enterprise Office in Waterford provides a range of grant assistance to eligible businesses. Billy availed of what is referred to as Measure One Supports, these are designed to help fund start-up costs, expansion plans, entry into new markets and jobs growth.

“The Business Expansion grant I received from the LEO was the most influential. It enabled me to put into practice the plans and advice I received from the mentoring sessions. I was able to purchase a CNC plasma cutting machine to help manufacture components for customers, and to increase manufacturing efficiency with existing and future products.

“I’m currently creating a bespoke sculpture commission for the village of Cappoquin and also working on the restoration of an 1800's mill wheel for Ireland's newest and only zero emissions Distillery in Ahascragh, Co. Galway.”
